What Are the Odds of Getting It Published?

Writer and friend Deborah Garafano found the “Odds of Getting Published” by Dean Talbot an interesting read. Originally published on February 2, 2023, some of the statistics reported in the article may have changed, but the odds of an author getting his or her work traditionally published still stand between 1 and 2 percent.

According to Bowker, which provides resources to help authors publish, distribute, and promote their books, the number of self-published titles topped 2.6 million in 2023. By comparison, the number of traditionally published titles fell to 563,019.

Publishers and agents look for well-written manuscripts that are interesting, unique, and free of mechanical errors. Even high-standard manuscripts, however, face a high rate of rejection. For example, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (1997) by J.K. Rowling was rejected more than 10 times by different publishing houses.
