Loop Head Peninsula, West Clare

Loop Head Peninsula is a slender finger of land that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean from the most westerly point of County Clare. It encompasses the villages of Cross, Kilbaha and Carrigaholt, as well as the charming seaside town of Kilkee, with its beautiful sheltered bay and stunning beach.

Loop Head Drive is a stop along the Wild Atlantic Way, a 1,500-mile-long coastal road that runs from the wind-whipped tip of Malin Head in County Donegal to the balmy beauty of Kinsale town in County Cork.

Sights along the two-hour drive from Limerick included (from top left) Keating’s in Kilbaha, which claims to be the nearest pub to New York City; Lissycasey village; Gaelic road sign for Kilbaha; the Atlantic Ocean from the Loop Head Lighthouse; Kilballyowen; Bob at the Loophead Lighthouse; and the Loop Head Lighthouse, which has been guarding the entrance to River Shannon, since 1670.
